Lauren Stinnet Places First in Senior Nationals

by Risa Bernstein

When we tune in to the Summer Olympics this July, there's an excellent chance weÕll be watching one of Reston's own compete for the Gold. Lauren Stinnet, 15 years old and Reston born and bred, is one her way to the Olympic trials in Indianapolis on March 6-12. LaurenÕs event is the 200 meter butterfly. And after placing first in the Senior Nationals in Orlando recently, she stands a very good chance of being chosen for one of two spots on the US Olympic team. Her time was 2:13.52. Fast enough to win Seniors this year, but not fast enough to be 1st or 2nd at Olympic Trials.

Lauren began swimming competitively at age 5 on Reston Swim Team Association's Lake Audubon swim team. Last summer she placed 9th in the Nationals, and this past December she placed 7th in the US Open. Then she brought home the Gold from Orlando, and now sheÕs on her way to Indianapolis. To qualify for one of the spots on the Olympic team, she must place in the top 8 in the preliminaries, then place 1st or 2nd in the finals.

Of course, Lauren didnÕt make it this far without extreme perseverance, not to mention hour upon hour of practice. In fact, she told me she practices 5 1/2 hours a day, both before and after school. She attends school at Holton Arms Academy in Bethesda, MD and practices at American University.

A self-described "computer geek", Lauren said she would love to receive e-mail from her well-wishers. Her e-mail address is astinnet@ix.netcom.com. Lauren, you can be sure that ALL of Reston is rooting for you. Good luck at the trials and we hope to be watching you swim to victory this summer!
