Children's Consignment Store Hidden Away at Lake Anne

by Risa Bernstein
Tucked away alongside the eateries and galleries of Lake Anne sits Reston's pearl of a consignment shop, Small Change. Owners Susan Gerstein and Margaret Johnson established Small Change in 1981 because, as Susan puts it, "It made so much sense, demographically and economically." There was no children's consignment store in the Reston/Herndon area and with so many children in so many families outgrowing so many clothes, the need was obvious. Since then, Small Change has grown into a well-known and recognized shop that holds wonderful high-quality bargains, both old and new, for the "smaller" members of the family.

Small Change currently has 1200 active consigners. Consignments are not limited to clothing; toys, equipment (such as swings and strollers), as well as hand-made items (such as hand-painted clothing and quilts) are also welcome. In fact, Susan told me they have approximately 20,000 items in the store for your shopping pleasure! Sizes range from newborn to high school/teen-type styles, and they also carry maternity clothing. Fall/Winter clothing is taken for consignment from July to mid-December; Summer/Spring clothing is taken from February to mid-June. There is a seasonal half-price sale in late January and late June. Consignment is by appointment only. Clothes must be freshly laundered and in excellent condition. Items are consigned for a period of two months, with 50% of the sale price going to the consigner. At the end of that time, consigners are welcome to come pick up whatever items of theirs that haven't been sold. They also have the option of leaving the items at Small Change; those items will then be donated to church groups or homeless shelters.

Susan feels the success of their store lies in her and Margaret's commitment to give something back to the community that has been so good to them over the years. Small Change was the first recipient of the Best of Reston Award for Community Service, given by Reston Interfaith and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce in 1992. Small Change has also been featured consistently in Families Magazine as Best Consignment Shop for Children in Northern Virginia. And, Susan and Margaret receive yearly citations from the State and Social Service agencies for their virtual daily donations of clothing to the needy.

Small change is located at Lake Anne Plaza. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10-5. The phone number is 437-7730. I urge everyone to drop by Small Change and take a few minutes to search the nooks and crannies of the shop. I guarantee you'll find just what you're looking for. And tell Susan and Margaret that I sent you. Happy shopping!
