History of Herndon

Only 23 miles away from the bustling activity of our nation's capital lies the historical Town of Herndon, Virginia, stituated in western Fairfax County.

The roots of this Town go back to the early 1700's, when the area was predominately a farming community. It was a quiet country village whose development was spurred in 1857 by the construction of a railroad which linked the area with Washington, D.C. and Winchester, Virginia. Today, Herndon is a thriving residential and business community linked to the world through Dulles International Airport. The Wall Street Journal recently named Herndon as one of the top "boom towns" in the United States, referring to its remarkable growth during the past decade. But amidst the economic boom, Herndon remains sensitive to preserving its historic past, with the Heritage Preservation District tending some 304 properties and 125 acres.
